#E51700-INTRODUCTORY SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS (SSA)- Grades 9-11

This introductory course is college preparatory level designed for students who already have the foundation in speaking Spanish in the home. It is designed to help them develop, maintain, and enhance proficiency in their home language. The emphasis of this class will be on improving grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Spanish is used 100% of the time in class by the teacher and students. This course is considered equivalent to spanish 2.

This college preparatory course is the second course in the Spanish for Spanish speakers series building upon students’ existing skills, this course will continue to expand strategies for speaking, reading and writing. The course will present topics related to Latino culture, literature and history to deepen students’ appreciation of their linguistic and cultural heritage. Spanish is used 100% of the time in class by the teacher and students. this course is considered equivalent to spanish 3. upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible to enroll in Spanish 4 Honors or Spanish AP.

In Spanish 1, students learn basic Spanish while learning more about the Spanish-speaking world. This challenging college preparatory class uses the Descubre textbook series as well as useful apps and websites. Spanish 1 explores basic beginning vocabulary and the major foundational grammar concepts. This high-energy, fast-moving class includes reading, listening, speaking, and writing activities. ADVANCED BEGINNERS are welcome to enroll in Spanish 2, but please review Spanish 1 Syllabus IN DETAIL before selecting Spanish 2.

Expand listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while learning more about the Spanish-speaking world. This is a 2nd year college preparatory class, using the Descubre textbook series and a wide variety of interactive instructional methods. Spanish 2 explores most of the primary verb tenses, with emphasis on the past and imperfect tenses, with an introduction to the subjunctive.

Spanish 3 is a challenging third year preparatory course, using a wide variety of interactive instructional methods. This course reviews and expands on the verb tenses taught in Spanish II while offering more opportunities for students to show growth in their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students continue to study the Spanish-speaking world, and are encouraged to speak Spanish during class.

Spanish 4 (H) is an immersion course where students engage in activities oriented toward achieving a higher level of proficiency in communication skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and overall comprehension. The course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. It exposes students to cultural products, practices and perspectives. The six themes that the course is structured around are: Beauty & Aesthetics, Contemporary Life, Families and Communities, Global Challenges, Personal & Public Identities, and Science & Technology. This class is conducted entirely in Spanish. Students completing the fourth year of Spanish with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish, a 2.0 in English, and have a Standard Met score on the 11th grade CAASPP testing will be awarded a California State Seal of Biliteracy on their transcript and will receive a cord at graduation.

This course mirrors the Spanish IV Honors course with additional assignments in reading, writing, listening, and speaking designed to prepare students for the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam. Students taking this course are expected to take the AP exam in the spring.

American sign language 1 is an introductory course designed for students with little or no previous study of Asl. this course teaches basic conversation, grammar, and vocabulary. The focus is on expressive and receptive American sign language, fingerspelling, and the culture of the deaf community. each unit will cover vocabulary related to a specific theme (friends and family, leisure activities, school or work, etc.) and grammar concepts appropriate to level 1. as students progress through each unit, they will build upon previously learned material and be given opportunities to strengthen their use of their expressive and receptive language skills. Students will also learn conversational stratagies and cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation in asl, with deaf and hard-of-hearing native users of the language.

American Sign Language 2 builds on the basics learned in level 1, a deeper understanding of American Sign Language, fingerspelling, and the culture of the Deaf community. Students will begin working towards more complex, faster paced conversation. Students work to build a solid foundation that could eventually allow a future career working with the deaf community. Be aware: students will be expected to be in a silent (deaf) environment for much of class instruction.
